Former United States Supreme Court Justice comes to town

The law faculty at my local university here in Wellington is next week hosting an evening function for the US Supreme Court's first woman justice, Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who will talk about Guantanamo Bay: A Legal Black Hole.

I'm excited to think Justice O'Connor (78) has come all the way down here in the middle of winter. I know she's a golfer but perhaps she's also a skier?

Despite the challenging subject matter, I plan to ask her a mediation question.

It's just that I don't know how I'm going to do that yet - and I was hoping you would help me.

Do you have a insightful one-liner that I can ask - allowing me to link to the Justice's presentation but getting to things mediation?

Geoff, I don't know if this will help, but Sandra Day O'Connor for many years has been known as an enthusiastic supporter of ADR.

In fact, she once wrote,

The courts of this country should not be the places where resolution of disputes begins. They should be the places where the disputes end after alternative methods of resolving disputes have been considered and tried.

I suppose you could ask her what her thoughts are about that today. Wish I could be there to hear her speak -- what an opportunity for you!
